Welcome to our New Members

Greetings to you all - another newsletter at last! It might have been wishful thinking that I would send out a newsletter twice monthly, but so it is with volunteer work ;) In fact, it's been more than a month since the first newsletter and it's great to see how many raw food lovers (and raw newbies too) have joined our meetup since that time. Welcome to: Heather (I think I missed you last time), Team Raw (they are filming a documentary on local professional baseball pitchers eating raw foods to optimize performance - hope we hear more on that soon!), Ryan Fitzpatrick, L., Niki Hadany, Teresa, Katrina, Lisa, Ted, Aurea, Mary, Ann, Tracy, Timothy Johnson, Briana, David, matt something, & Pam Ruggles.

Thanks so much for joining and I look forward to meeting you all!

RSVP now for the Rawsome Potluck Picnic at Catalina State Park!

It's happening (I'm counting on clear skies!)... the first potluck of the new year will be at Catalina State Park on Sunday February 21st. A number of you have RSVP'd already - thank you! I'm guessing quite a few more of you will decide to attend as the date approaches (it is helpful if you RSVP sooner rather than later though!). I've also submitted the event to the Tucson Weekly (etc.) so I'm guessing there will be even more new members in attendance.

If you're a raw food newbie and aren't sure what to bring, don't despair! There are many simple raw food dishes you can prepare that don't require special equipment or take a lot of time. I like to get recipe ideas online - simply type "raw food recipe" into your favorite search engine and you will find unending inspiration. Or consider bringing a durian fruit and you'll quickly win some new friends and provide entertainment all in one fell swoop (available frozen at Grant-Stone Asian Market - be sure to buy it a day in advance so it thaws in time). If you're still stuck and would like some suggestions, feel free to start a discussion on our message board about it, or contact me and I'll be happy to help.

By the way, I'll be bringing a half gallon or so of homemade "Body Ecology style" vegan Kimchi (YUMM!) - that means probiotics galore because no salt is added during fermentation (salt inhibits the growth of the beneficial microflora). It goes great with so many raw foods as a side dish or in salad or a wrap - not to be missed!

Please do check the guidelines I've added to the event description, as to what to bring along with your potluck dish (your own plate, cup and utensils, serving utensils for your potluck dish, a list of ingredients of your dish etc.) Rawsome Potluck Picnic at Catalina State Park. Be sure to add your RSVP while you're there ;)

Lastly, remember that there is a $6 park entrance fee per vehicle. If anyone wants to carpool or meet outside the park to save on parking fees, feel free to post to the event page, or email the group. And yes, well-behaved dogs on leashes are welcome!

Don't forget the Pre-Potluck Hike to Romero Pools

This is one of Tucson's nicest hikes, what could be better than Romero Pools together with raw friends! We'll meet at the trail head at 11 a.m. for a leisurely hike to the pools - we'll have plenty of time to relax and chill before returning for the potluck feast.

FYI: I personally am a slow hiker given I still have a significant burden of heavy metals in me that makes my body slow to recover from intense exercise. This isn't a difficult hike, so even if you're not a seasoned hiker, don't let that stop you from joining us. Check out the details here: Pre-Potluck Hike to Romero Pools

Lee Bracker Interviews

Tucson's own food and health political activist, author, and TRFM member Lee Bracker will interviewed this week on two different internet radio shows, likely on the topics of S510, Dietary Supplement Safety Act Bill of 2010 introduced by Sen. John McCain, and the cancer industry. Check out his message board post here: Lee Bracker Internet Radio Interviews

Raw Food & Soccer Sundays?

Some of you might be interested in this idea that Julia posted to our meetup site (thanks Julia!):

"Estaban Park is on Main just south of Speedway. Some friends and I are starting to play soccer there every Sunday at 2pm, so it seems like an obvious place for me to have a picnic. Shall we? Feel free to call me, Julia, at 603-721-9856 and we can plan on meeting there. Otherwise, I'll just take a simple salad and a book and find a tree and wait for soccer."

You can also send Julia an email by visiting her Meetup profile.

Superfood and Medicinal Herbs and Teas Coop Buys

This is something I have in mind that will take another few weeks to get off the ground, but I want to give everyone a heads up. I have a wholesale account with Ultimate Superfoods and I can save our members over some of the lowest online sources on what are truly some of the highest quality superfoods available. I'm also considering sponsoring cooperative buys of Mountain Rose Herbs products - we can save substantially on volume orders.

Along with this I hope to share some information as to why you might want to consider including raw superfoods (and possibly medicinal herbs) in your raw diet, if you aren't already.

Also, I am still devising the best way to help support our members who are new to the raw food lifestyle and want to learn how to incorporate raw foods in their diets. As always, your feedback and suggestions are welcome on any of these topics.

Looking forward to seeing you all on the 21st!

Blessings of health and abundance to all,

~Jha'en
